How to write CV

Dear reader, for use in our job and career use, need to have a CV. CV stands for Curriculum Vitae. In a CV we put a brief account of our career. In this article, we will see how we can produce/write a CV.

A CV is also called a resume. or pro data. It is a sort of autobiography. Looking at it the prospective employer could know who I am and what I can do, my experiences, my potentialities etc. The CV reflects one's personality; it is an overall description of a person in writing, it brings out the exceptional qualities and attributes of a person. So, it represents you to decision-makers, during and after an interview. The resume is a French word, which means summary.

All resumes must include the name & address, education, experience. Putting your name and address in full and correctly is very important. You have to give the complete current address and phone number. If you have a temporary (present) and a permanent address then in the CV, include both the addresses. If the prospective employer cannot contact you, how can you get the job even after being selected?

The full form of CV is Curriculum Vitae. In English ‘Curriculum’ and ‘Vitae’ comes from Latin words. Curriculum means ‘Course’ or ‘courses’ and Vitae means ‘life’. So Curriculum Vitae means Courses of life.  Biodata and Resume are two more English terms of biography. However, there is a difference between Resume CV and Biodata.

All/most of you will have to write effective Curriculum Vitae, in short, CV,  (called ‘resume’, in American English) for various purposes such as, to get a job  or scholarship, etc. Writing a good CV is a skill all of you will need for your  career. The CV is meant to introduce you and your background to somebody who does  not know you. It should present you in the best possible light, in a concise and  well-structured manner.

A regular CV for business purposes should definitely  not go over one Ad size page. If one wants to use it for academic purposes and  not for a job, the CV can pass that limit and the additional space is used to  describe academic activities, like conferences, publications list etc.

A well-written CV shows first what is most important but contains all the relevant  information. To this goal, it is advised that you adapt it to suit your target  (a specific type of job or scholarship). Pay attention to the order in which you  present information in your CV. Here is a guideline for writing a good CV. although there are a number of ways  for writing a CV, they agree on some common details.

What is Biodata?

Biodata is the full form of the word Biological data.  It is commonly used in medical cases and in prisons.‌ It contains details of a person's physical and physical information.  Hospital doctors usually use the patient's biodata to diagnose the disease.  Prison authorities also store inmates' biodata.

What is a Resume?

Resume French words.  In English, it means ‘Summary of life’.  The resume is to be written in short form.  Usually, it's not written more than two pages.  Both CV and Resume are used for the job.  The term “CV” is more commonly used in British English and the term “Resume” is more commonly used in American English.

Difference between CV and Resume

There is no difference between CV and Resume.  However, the CV contains more information than the Resume.  Resumes are usually written in one page but can be a maximum of two pages.  Personal information tends to be summarized in a Resume and detailed in the CV. CV is usually required for employment in our country.  Usually, the recruiting authority asks for the candidate's CV.

A CV includes a candidate's name, educational qualifications, experience, language skills, marital status, computer skills, references, etc.  The candidate should have a reflection in the appropriate CV for the post for which he has submitted his CV.

In the modern age, as there is a facility to use the computer, the candidate has to compose his CV on the computer.  It is better to compose in 11 or 12 fonts on A4 size paper.  Capital Letter can be used in each title.  If each point is made bold, it will be easily noticed.  In general, after taking the CV printout, you have to take care to make it beautiful or attractive.

14 Rules for Writing Your CV

The information you need to provide in your CV are: 

Contract Address: In this part, the candidate will write his contact address. In the case of modern communication, mobile or e-mail number is required.

Personal details: Here you should include your date of birth, contact address,  telephone number and nationality. In case you have a permanent address  different from your temporary address, include both. Personal details can be  written with smaller fonts than the rest of the CV if you want to save space. You  should write your name with a bigger font than the rest of the text, so that the  the reader can easily see whose CV s/he is reading.

Objective: You should state very concisely what you accurately want to do. Say  something like, “To develop a career in.....”, or you can be more specific like “to  obtain a position in ... where I can use my skills in...” You can write a few lines to  describe that specifically, but keep in mind that you should show what you can  do for the organization or company you are sending the CV to more than what  the company can do for you. Writing a good objective is difficult, so take some time to think about what exactly you are going to write there.

Educational Qualifications: In this part, the candidate will provide all the information obtained from his various educational qualification certificates. For example, the name of the school, college or university and the year in which the certificate has been obtained should be written in columns so that they can be read at a glance.

After your personal details, give details about your education. It is suggested that you present details about education in reverse chronological order i.e., you start with the latest degree and go gradually back. You should mention all your academic achievements including grades/divisions/classes.

You should also mention scholarships and awards you received along with your achievements in co-curricular and extracurricular activities in your academic life. Mention the scholarships if you have received any or other types of awards such as best student’s award, best debater’s award, award for poetry recitation, extempore speech, sports and games and so on.

Scholarship: If the candidate has received any scholarship in his / her academic career, it should be recorded under this title.  And if there is no such achievement then this title is not necessary.

Experience: Here you should include experiences, if you have any, relevant to the position you are applying for. You should show that you are a person who can take initiative, has creativity and is innovative. You should be able to convince the employers that you will be the best pick for the job.

Working Experience: Candidates for this title will record any experience in their workplace. In the modern era, the experience is considered important almost everywhere in the field of employment.  The candidate should present the details of his experience in detail.  There is no need to include this title if someone has absolutely no work experience.

Computer Skill: In the modern era, computer skills are very important in the job field. So the candidate has to mention what kind of skills he has on his computer. Write if you know—Microsoft word or anything else of computer.

Training Experience: Candidates should mention if they have received any training anywhere.  The duration of the training, where the training was taken, what the training is about should be mentioned in detail.

Extracurricular activities: If you are writing a professional, and not an academic CV, you should mention activities/programmes you have attended/participated in.

Language Skill: You should also mention your level of competence in any language you know in all the four skills, i.e. whether you are average, good, very good or excellent in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening in the languages you know.

If one has very little knowledge of any language then it is called Rudimentary.  If someone has knowledge in the middle level, it is Intermediate.  These issues need to be written in detail.

Publication: If a candidate has any publication i.e. if he has written any book or if any of his writings have been published in the newspaper then they should be mentioned in detail.  If someone does not have such a publication, then he does not need to give this title.

Professional Memberships: If the candidate has become a member of any professional organization or club, it should be mentioned under this heading.  Keep in mind that there are many reputable clubs or organizations that require certain qualifications to be a member.  Therefore, being a member of a good organization is considered as a special qualification.

Interest or Hobby: How a candidate likes to spend his leisure time reveals the personality of that person. In their spare time, some like to listen to music, some like to draw pictures, some like to visit relatives, some like to take care of the garden and so on. One of the topics mentioned in this title. List your hobbies if space is left on the page. They look fine on a CV, showing that you are not a no-life workaholic, but a normal person. 

Reference: This is a very important part.  Under this section, the name, address, phone number, etc. of one or more high-ranking persons known to the candidate should be mentioned so that the recruiting authority can contact that person to know about the candidate.  References are especially important in some jobs.  It must be in all types of CV.

Signature: Lastly, the signature of the candidate must be present.  The full name will be in parentheses below the signature.  When composing a CV on a computer, you have to compose the full name with parentheses and in the print copy, you have to sign in black ink with a ballpoint pen or a pen just above it.

You can introduce other headings that suit your needs. Have a references section, where you should list contact details of 2 or 3 persons who would write letters of recommendation or reference letters for you. 

These are the usual components of a CV.  Print the CV on plain-white paper. You should never send a CV without a cover letter. If the advertisement does not say anything about a cover letter, you still should send one. Send the CV with covering letter in a matching A4 size envelope.
