In the year of 1987, the world commission on environment and development had announced a report named "Our Common Future" where sustainable development was adopted for the first time. In short, sustainable development means development using the present resources in a way that does not harm the preservation of the future. In other words, sustainable development means development by the best utilization of resources that lasts long.
What is sustainable development?
Sustainable Development' is a compromise with the total capacity to use the carrying capacity for the best use of resources keeping it longest. More hypothetically we can say, sustainable development defuses as much as possible type of consumption without consciousness of its capacity. Non-renewable resources are quite limited in the world. If those resources are whimsically utilized without checking their capacity, it may result in long term destruction of the capacity. Therefore, sustainable development is to use a resource making it resourceful and long-lasting without harming its future consistency.
The Conditions of the Policy
UNDP (United Nation's Development Programme) has identified some points which are the determination factors for sustainable development. These are:
👉Poverty alleviation.
👉Demise population growth.
👉More balanced disbursement of the resource.
👉Healthy, more, educated, and skilled human resource.
👉Decentralized, more effective and participatory government.
👉More production for a country's local demand and consumption with a balanced international trade and commerce.
👉More consciousness and significant awareness about the environment, assessment of the environment and ecological impacts on development and vis a vis development impact on ecology & environment, etc.

Sustainable development in Bangladesh
Sustainable development is a policy which is a must to follow for a country like Bangladesh, as there is the way of development and utilization of resource without harming possibility for the long run. Mankind cannot afford to rise its resources on earth. So, they must be aware of using it. One of the most important things for Bangladesh is to get the maximum utility of its limited resources.
How is that possible?
The answer is sustainable development. The conditions explained bellow are ought to be implemented if there is a sustainable development programme or policy equipped by the government Population Control That the efforts made by the government is getting success in population control. is good news. If the population growth is controlled, the poverty level would be demented, the distribution of resources would be diminished, the distribution of resources would be more balanced, the level of education and treatment would be improved, accommodation management would be eased and as a result, life and expectancy of life would be increased. Land Management successful land management may improve the country's socio-economic situation and reality.
Most of the people in Bangladesh are involved professionally with Agriculture, which means the major part of the country's total population is directly dependent on land resources. Instead, the total cultivable land around the country is captured by only 20% of them. Land reformation, revenue collection, saving fresh lands and distribution among the original owners are some potential in utilizing land sustainably. Poverty alleviation seems to be impossible without giving back the lands occupied by 20% to the original owners. Developing Agriculture Bangladesh is an agricultural country to which land is a matter of great urgency. The productivity, cultivability or utility of land is the most important factors of the country's agriculture.
Hybrid seeds of rice that are imported from abroad are now used randomly which is a bad sign for agriculture. The hybrid seeds are highly productive for the present which collapse or eat up future productivity like a giant. Our cultivation and harvesting must be scientific and more realistic if we want more sustainable utility from agriculture. It is not supportable to desalt the land's utility within a short time for the huge production of the present consumption. The seeds, water, fertilizer, insecticides must be reached to the farmer's hand within a due time not lately, which is a pre-condition to sustainable development. The agricultural Banking sectors must take initiatives in favour of peasant's welfare.
Infrastructure Development
Bangladesh is not in an advanced position from infrastructure points of view. But the infrastructure is the way of development for any country and there is nothing exceptional for Bangladesh. Though this is a riverine country, transportation through the riverways is difficult and time bearing which is a barrier for development. Moreover, the naval way or naval transportation also usually has some important infrastructure, whether, in Bangladesh, it is absence. Especially, the rural areas are the worst sufferers of this problem. Still, now, there is a lack of concrete roads in villages which defects the transport. Produced goods, vegetable and crops can not be transported immediately due to the absence of adequate roads and infrastructure. If the infrastructure becomes developed, the producer and the consumer can be benefited. However, educational equipment, health and primary health equipment depend on good infrastructure which has not been established yet. Nowadays development in all sectors relies on good and sound infrastructure.
Decentralizing Administration
Without decentralization of power, the government cannot properly make the grassroots level developer, farming, business and every other sector that traditional or non-traditional vastly depend on decentralization of government. Still, now the rate of child death is 150 in every 1000. The child education rate in rural areas is around 35%. Malnutrition, starvation and unemployment still make the village people sufferer. Without the decentralization of government, these typical problems can never be eliminated. Though the high court division has ruled on behalf of the local government, the government delay's the decision-making process. Primary health, mental health, education, agriculture etc.
Industrialization
Instead, Bangladesh is an agro-based country, the country has to be industrialized today or tomorrow. There is no country that became developed without industrialization. It is ought to be. The heavy industry cannot be set now in Bangladesh, although we have to be prepared and skilled for adopting heavy industry. The heavy industry needs raw materials, of which Bangladesh has not a rich possession. Besides, as an agro-economic society, Bangladesh can provide agro-based industries comprehensively. For this purpose, the government must knock first.
Environmental Management
The idea of sustainable development is much more relevant to the environment. In many countries of the world, there is EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) to balance between environment and development. We must provide the system. EIA has been engaged in five levels :
1. Determining technology.
2. Defining the economic and financial impact.
3. Environmental impact.
4. Social and cultural impact.
5. Risky allocation.
Sustainable development issue insists on bio-diversity. A country requires 25% of its land areas covered with forests at least. Bangladesh has only 17%. Therefore, drought-prone, starvation, deforestation, lack of bio-diversity, warming increasingly threats our geo-environment. Moreover, the emission of fuel from vehicles makes harm the ozone layer. Greenhouse effect imbalances our warming situation, insecticides, pesticides and dissolved poisonous chemical into the water makes the environment dangerous to live.
Discrimination
49% of the total population is the woman in the country. Therefore, it is a topmost emergency to eradicate the discrimination between women and men. Women must be empowered equally, otherwise, the development progress may fail to reach its summit. Empowerment of women is a must. Besides, all kinds of discrimination should be eradicated. Presently the women education, women still are not as bad as a rising pattern of progress. Women are equal consumers. So, they should enjoy equal joy and opportunity as well as they must be privileged at this time when they are also regarded as a vulnerable group. Recently, women temporization has been started through the union council from the primary level of society. It is an effective remark. Adequate law and enforcement must be provided for women security and to ensure social right.
The main theme of the policy of "sustainable development" is to promote reserving energy and resources in a compromising manner to check any abuse or excess use which is called waste. Rather, important is to invent ways to preserve natural resources for the welfare of future generation in the way that the present generation is not certainly missing any utility.
